Palmerston North Bridge Club, Corner Cook and Cuba Streets, Palmerston North
Guest Speaker
PATRICIA NICHOLSON
Patricia is a mediator employed by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment under the structure of Market Services and works in the Housing and Tenancy Services. She is based in Hawkes Bay and works out of the MBIE site in Napier.
Patricia came into the Public Service just before the implementation of the Residential Tenancies Act 1986 on 1 February 1987. The attraction for her was that, for the first time in New Zealand, mediation as a method of dispute resolution was set in legislation.
Having worked in the mediation field in New Zealand and offshore previously she had observed mediation as a timely and cost effective process to resolve disputes compared to the more formal judicial process. Patricia is a firm believer of people telling their own story at mediation with or without the support of an advocate. This tends to lead to more satisfaction and agreement with the mediation outcome.
She has a legal and financial background that together with her interests outside of the job, means she has a better and more practical understanding of how the world works.
The association is fortunate to have Patricia present to us.
Spread the word. This is an opportunity, not to be missed, to find out about the process required to have a matter mediated effectively.
